Cleaver wielding thief jailed after botched bank robbery

A man who killed and robbed a bank last year has been jailed for life, with a maximum punishment of 20 years in jail.

Police allege the 41-year-old from Newcastle in Western Australia went into The Stilwell Bank in Sydney's inner west in the early hours of July 8 last year.

On the pretext that he was looking for a woman, the man began to open the bank door, then slashed a hole through the side.

He took $12,000 in change, with $20,000 in his pockets.

The robber then ran out of the bank, before fleeing the scene in a dark-coloured Mercedes which turned east.

The bank's CCTV system alerted police.

They found the victim's body a few days later, along a river bank.

The man denied his involvement, and told police he had been looking after the woman and had seen nothing of what happened on the night.

However, police found a number of inconsistencies about his story, leading to him being charged under the Crimes Act.

He denied killing the victim and that he had attempted to rob the bank.

The court heard Mr Phelan had a lengthy criminal history, including offences relating to alcohol and drugs.

However, it was agreed he should not be given a custodial term.

The court heard Mr Phelan had not used a wheelchair since his childhood, and a medical doctor believed he suffered from diabetes.

He was placed under supervision with the Disability Services Authority before he was jailed.

'Complete stranger'

Mr Phelan was born in Adelaide, but grew up near Port Charlotte in WA.

According to his solicitor, Mr Phelan's past was "extremely disturbing", and he was shocked that a custodial sentence would be imposed.

The court was told Mr Phelan was born to married mother and father, who moved to Sydney with the family in 1993.

Police have described him as a complete stranger.

He is due to make a court appearance at Bondi Beach on August 13.
